DAVIS, Calif. — Led by a 2-under par round of 68 from junior Owen Taylor, the Sacramento State men's golf team shot 290 during the second round of the El Macero Invitational on Saturday.

Despite posting the third lowest team score of the day, the Hornets remained in third place with one round remaining. Sacramento State was able to make up five shots on second-place Cal State Fullerton and trails the Titans by three strokes. However, host UC Davis shot 279 (9-under) and is 21 strokes ahead of the Hornets.

Taylor moved into a tie for eighth place while also matching the second lowest score of his career. The junior started on the first hole and was in the red for most of the day with a birdie on the par-5 second kickstarting his round. He went on toe birdie the par-5 fifth and the par-4 sixth before making the turn at 4-under par following a birdie on the par-4 ninth. On the back side of the course, Taylor had two pars on both sides of a bogey on the par-3 12th. He returned to 4-under with a birdie on the par-5 15th and ended with three more pars.

Freshman Robert Parden is tied with Taylor for eighth place with a 36-hole total of 145 (1-over). Parden had a birdie and bogey to go along with seven pars on the front nine. He bogeyed the par-4 10th but dropped back to even with a birdie on the par-4 11th. Following two pars, he bogeyed the par-4 14th and the par-3 16th to move to 2-over. Parden drew even with Taylor with the help of a birdie on the par-5 18th.

Cody Bates shot 74 on Saturday for the third lowest round on the team. Bates recovered from early trouble which had him at 3-over through two holes after a bogey and double bogey. He began his climb back with a birdie on the par-4 fourth but a bogey on the par-3 seventh took him back to 3-over. A birdie on the par-4 ninth was trailed by four pars. Bates ended his round with a bogey on the par-4 14th and a birdie on the par-4 17th. His 36-hole total of 72-74-146 has hm tied for 11th place.

Luke Kristo completed the team's scorers with a round of 75. Kristo was even at the midway point with two birdies and two bogeys. A double bogey in the par-4 11th put him over par for the rest of the day and he finished with a birdie on No. 15 and bogeys on Nos. 17 and 18.

Senior Jordan Weir is tied for 49th at 79-76-155. Weir's second round was comprised of three birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey.

The third round of the tournament will begin at 7 a.m. on Sunday.
