CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's golf team recorded its fourth top-three finish of the year as it placed second at the Folino Men's Invitational on Tuesday.

The Hornets shot 291 during the final round and were able to jump UC Irvine in the standings. Sacramento State finished the three-round event with a total of 879. Host Cal State Fullerton ran away from the field with a total of 1-under par 863. UC Irvine was third (886) while British Columbia (904) and Grand Canyon (920) completed the top five.

Sacramento State's Owen Taylor tied for second and Jordan Weir placed fourth to lead the Hornets. Mark Anguiano of Cal State Fullerton was the medalist after shooting 66-68-70-204 to end at 14-under. Taylor and CSF's Ryan Tetrault each totaled 214. Weir concluded his 54 holes at 216.

On Tuesday, Taylor recorded his second consecutive round of 70. The junior began play on the 10th hole with a par, birdie and bogey. He repeated the pattern on the next three holes before making the turn at 1-under with the help of a birdie on the par-5 18th. After three pars started the front side of the course, Taylor bogeyed the par-4 fourth. He birdied Nos. 6 and 7 to accompany three pars over his last five holes to end at 2-under.

The effort lowered Taylor's season average to 71.11 on the year in his six tournaments. The junior has placed among the top five three times and has 13 rounds of 72 or better.

Weir was 3-over through his first 10 holes with a combination of three birdies and six bogeys. From that point, he parred six consecutive holes and was able to make up some ground with an eagle on the 516-yard par-5 eighth. A par on No. 9 gave him a 73 for the day and his first top five finish of the season.

Freshman Robert Parden and junior Luke Kristo each contributed rounds of 74 towards the team total on Tuesday. Parden had the best start to the day among the team as he was 2-under through nine holes. Two pars and a bogey came before he birdied the par-4 14th and par-3 15th. A birdie on the first dropped him to 2-under where he stayed until a bogey on the par-4 third. Parden remained in the red until the par-4 sixth where he triple bogeyed. He concluded his day with two pars, a bogey on No. 9 and birdie on No. 10. Overall, Parden tied for 16th at 79-75-74-228.

Kristo had nearly the opposite round of Parden as he bogeyed his first three holes and was 3-over until a birdie on No. 18. That started a stretch where he also birdied Nos. 1, 3 and 5 to get to 1-under through 12 holes. However, he returned to the black with back-to-back bogeys on the sixth and seventh and another on No. 10. The round was the best for Kristo during the tournament and moved him into a tie for 24th place.

Freshman Cody Bates tied for 19th with rounds of 76-73-80-229. During the final round, Bates had two birdies, 12 pars, a bogey, two double bogeys and a quintuple bogey on the par-4 fourth.

Next up for the team will be the Sacramento State Invitational on March 3-4. The event, which is sponsored by Shingle Springs Honda, will take place at Valley Hi Country Club and will feature 11 teams.
