WEIR'S 68, TAYLOR'S 70 LEADS MEN'S GOLF'S CHARGE AT FOLINO
CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. — Jordan Weir and Owen Taylor sparked the Sacramento State men's golf team's turnaround with a 68 and 70, respectively, in the second in the round of the Folino Invitational on Monday.
The Hornets opened the day with a team score of 302 but lowered that mark to 286 in the afternoon to jump into third place. Host Cal State Fullerton shot 287-285-572 to open a 14-stroke lead of UC Irvine (290-296-586). Sacramento Sate, British Columbia (609) and Utah State (618) complete the top five heading into the third round.
In the opening round, Sacramento State was led by a 74 from Taylor and a 75 from Weir. The team struggled from the outset before beginning its turnaround late in the first round. In fact, the Hornets ranked last among the nine teams for the first half of the round.
After playing his first six holes of the day at 5-over, Weir had birdies on the par-4 14th and 17th along with 10 birdies over his final 12 holes. His second round began with a bogey on the par-4 second. However, that proved to be his final miscue of the afternoon as he recorded five birdies and 12 pars. His two-round total of 76-58-143 places him in a tie for second along with Cal State Fullerton's Ryan Tetrault.
Taylor was 2-under over his final nine holes of the opening round. He began the second round with birdies on Nos. 1 and 2 and made the turn at 1-under par following a bogey on the par-4 fourth. Taylor returned to even with a bogey on the par-5 10th but immediately birdied Nos. 11 and 12 and added six pars. The junior will enter the final round in fourth place at 74-68-144.
Freshman Cody Bates is in 12th place after rounds of 76-73-149. Bates' first round consisted of three birdies, nine pars, five bogeys and a double bogey. In the second round, Bates began with consecutive bogeys on Nos. 5 and 6. He eventually dropped to 1-under with birdies on Nos. 8, 18 and 1 — all par 5's. A double bogey on the par-4 second took him to 1-over where he remained with two more pars.
Freshman Robert Parden and junior Luke Kristo are tied for 18th and 30th, respectively. Parden's first round was comprised of a birdie, three bogeys, a double bogey and triple bogey. His second round contained three birdies, two bogeys and a pair of double bogeys. Kristo was the only Hornet not to have a double bogey or worse in the first round but did have seven bogeys to go along with two birdies. In the second round, he had five bogeys and a double bogey.
The third round will take place on Tuesday on the Ike Course at Industry Hills Golf Club.
