BATES, PARDEN EACH SHOOT BELOW PAR IN FINAL ROUND OF CULLUM

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. — Freshman Cody Bates recorded a career low round of 68 and fellow freshman Robert Parden shot 71 to lead Sacramento State in the third round of the Bill Cullum Invitational on Tuesday at Wood Ranch Golf Club.

Overall, the Hornets finished 7-over during the round and totaled 292-298-289-879 to place 10th in the tournament. Cal State Fullerton rallied to win the team title, edging San Diego by one stroke.

Bates tied for 14th place with a 54-hole total of 71-76-67-215. During the third round, Bates was actually 1-over through three holes but quickly rebounded with birdies on the par-5 15th and par-4 16th. After two pars, he birdied the par-4 first to move to 2-under. A bogey on No. 3 set him back a stroke but he closed strongly with birdies on the par-5 sixth and the par-4 ninth and 10th.

Parden also saved his best for late in his round. He had three bogeys and one birdie through his first 14 holes before posting birdies on Nos. 8, 9 and 10. The score marked the second time this season that the true freshman from Saratoga, Calif., finished below par. Parden tied for 50th overall at 75-77-71-223.

Juniors Luke Kristo and Owen Taylor also contributed to the team total with rounds of 74 and 76, respectively. Kristo began with a bogey and birdie on his first two holes but slipped to 2-over after a double bogey on the par-5 15th. A birdie on No. 18 earned one of the strokes back before a double on the par-5 second and a bogey on the par-4 fourth moved him to 4-over. Kristo finished with birdies on Nos. 5 and 9 along with four pars. His total of 77-77-74-228 ties for 67th.

Taylor tied for 35th overall after shooting 73-71-76-220. His final round was comprised of three birdies, nine pars, five bogeys and a double bogey.

Jordan Swanson tied for 60th with a 54-hole total of 73-74-79-226.

Daniel Chian of Long Beach State shot 72-68-66-206 to become the medalist. Chian finished one stroke ahead of Cal State Fullerton's Mark Anguiana and Jon Rahm of Arizona State.

The event marked the final competition for the Hornet men during the fall portion of their season. The team will next compete at the Anteater Invitational on Jan. 27-28 in Costa Mesa, Calif.
