SWANSON SHOOTS CAREER LOW 68 AT WINCHESTER CLASSIC
MEADOW VISTA, Calif. — A day after tying his career low with a 2-under par round of 70, Jordan Swanson carded a 4-under 68 to finish third at the Winchester Classic on Sunday.
Swanson's performance was tied for the tournament low by any player. The Hornets shot 296 during the third round on Sunday and finished in fifth place with a three-round total of 886.
Cal State Fullerton won the team title at 868 and were five strokes ahead of UC Davis. Oklahoma Christian (877) and UC Santa Barbara (877) were the only other teams in the 11-team tournament to finish ahead of the Hornets.
Oklahoma Christian's Sam Johnston was the medalist with three rounds under par. Johnston shot 71-68-70-209 to total 209 which was two strokes ahead of the rest of the field.
Along with setting his low round record, Swanson also recorded his lowest 54-hole total (213) as a Hornet and his first top five finish. The Elk Grove native's previous three-round low was 221.
On Sunday, he parred his first five holes before a birdie on the par-4 sixth took him into the red where he would remain for the rest of the day. A birdie on the par-4 eighth dropped him to 2-under. His only bogey of the day came on the par-3 11th but he bounced back with a par of No. 12 and birdies on Nos. 13 and 14. Swanson parred his next three holes before ending with a birdie on the par-5 18th.
Jordan Weir shot 73 to rank second on the team during the day and finish tied for 15th (75-73-73-221). Weir was 3-over through 13 holes but rallied with birdies on the par-4 14th and 17th. During the round, he had four birdies, 10 pars, three bogeys and a double bogey.
Ryan Williams tied for 21st place after shooting 75-74-74-223. Williams ended the tournament with a 2-over par round but had to scramble to reach that number. Consecutive double bogeys (Nos. 7 and 8) and three other bogeys had the senior at 6-over through 12 holes. He rebounded with birdies on Nos. 13, 16, 17 and 18.
Owen Taylor completed the lineup with a round of 81. Taylor tied for 40th overall with a 54-hole total of 233. His final round was comprised of three birdies, six pars, eight bogeys and a quadruple bogey on the par-3 15th.
Sacramento State will complete its regular season at the America Sky Championship in San Antonio, Texas. The Hornets are the defending conference champions after winning last year's event which was hosted by Hartford.
