TAYLOR TIES CAREER BEST, WILLIAMS TIED FOR FIFTH AT LONE STAR INVITATIONAL
SAN ANTONIO — Sophomore Eric Taylor matched his career best with an even-par 72 to lead the Sacramento State men's golf team in the second round of the Lone Star Invitational on Monday. The tournament will conclude with the third round on Tuesday.
Sacramento State shot 299 during the second round and dropped one spot into seventh place with a two-round total of 594. The Hornets trail North Texas by 15 strokes for the top spot. The remainder of the top five consists of Denver (582), Central Arkansas (585), UTSA (589) and Houston (591).
"I know our scores don't reflect it, but we're really close to playing a good golf as a team," Sacramento State men's head coach Christopher Hall said. "The conditions are great and the course is playing tough, but we just need to start converting some birdie opportunities."
Taylor shot 36 on both the front and back sides of the course. The sophomore bogeyed the par-3 3rd hole before a birdie on the par-4 7th returned him to even. On the back side, the bogeyed the par-3 13th and rallied with a birdie on the par-5 17th. He moved into a tie for 46th place overall with a 36-hole total of 81-72-153.
Senior Ryan Williams is tied for fifth place after shooting a second-round 74. Williams, who shot 2-under par 70 during the opening round on Sunday, began the day with birdies on the par-4 2nd and the 7th to go along with seven pars. Pars on Nos. 10 and 11 were followed by a double-bogey on the par-4 12th, and bogeys on No. 13 and the par-5 15th. Williams is seven strokes behind North Texas' Rodolfo Cazaubon who holds the individual lead at 68-70-138.
Owen Taylor ranked third on the team during the second round and is tied for 46th along with his twin brother, Eric. Taylor shot 75 on Monday with a birdie on the par-5 17th as his highlight. He also had 13 pars and four bogeys.
Sacramento State also counted a 78 from Jordan Swanson. The junior is tied for 34th overall with rounds of 72-78-150. Swanson was 1-over through nine holes with birdies on the par-3 3rd and 8th. He moved to even after a birdie on the par-3 11th but bogeyed six of his final seven holes.
