NBA G League draft results
SACRAMENTO — Former Sacramento State guard Marcus Graves was selected in the first round (17th overall pick) of the NBA G League draft by the Stockton Kings. Stockton is the NBA affiliate of the Sacramento Kings.
Graves, who will join former Hornet Cody Demps on Stockton's roster, becomes the fifth player in school history to be drafted by a G-League team (former D-League), and fourth in the last five years. In addition, the 17th overall selection is the second highest Sacramento State draft pick ever in the G League.
Graves joins Eric Stuteville (1st overall by Northern Arizona in 2017), Mikh McKinney (25th overall by Northern Arizona in 2016), John Dickson (55th overall by the Bakersfield in 2015) and Jameel Pugh (68th overall by Dakota in 2006) as the Sacramento State players to be drafted into the G-League.
Graves, Stuteville, McKinney, Dickson, Pugh, Joel Jones (Los Angeles in 2006) and Damond Edwards (Mobile in 2002) are the seven former Hornets to appear on a G-League roster.
Graves played five years for the Hornets from 2014-19, redshirting during the 2017-18 season.
"I'm just very blessed," Graves said. "I've come a long way, but I still have more work to do. My support system - family, friends and Sacramento State - is the reason I'm here today."
A second team all-Big Sky Conference selection and Big Sky all-tournament choice a year ago, Graves was the team captain of the 2018-19 squad and started all 31 games. He averaged a team-high 17.0 points per game to go along with 4.7 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 2.0 steals in 34.7 minutes. Graves scored in double figures in all but two games, including each of the final 17 games of the season.
The San Diego, Calif., native was named all-Big Sky Tournament last year after averaging 28.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game while shooting 60% (21-35) from the field and 69% (11-16) from the 3-point line over two games. That included 27 points in a first-round win over NAU, and a career-high 30 points against eventual champion Montana in the quarterfinals.
Among Big Sky leaders, he ranked first in both assists and steals, fourth in minutes and assist-to-turnover ratio (+1.7), and fifth in scoring. Making his year even more impressive is he missed the entire 2017-18 season after undergoing back surgery.
Graves became the 16th Hornet in program history (1948-pres.), and 10th during the Div. I era (1991-pres.) to score 1,000 career points. He finished with 1,354 points, the eighth most in program history, and fifth most in the Div. I era. After scoring just 16 points as a freshman, he combined for 1,338 over his final three active seasons.
Also in program history, Graves finished second in total minutes (3,300) and starts (93), third in assists (472), fourth in free throws attempted (417), sixth in free throws made (307), and seventh in steals (141), assists per game (4.5), field goals made (478) and field goals attempted (1,130). He was selected to play in the 3X3U National Championship last April in Minnesota.
