Lou Henson Award Finalists
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- After being named the Big Sky Conference MVP and unanimous first team all-league, Sacramento State senior guard Mikh McKinney was announced as a finalist for the 2015 Lou Henson Player of the Year award, presented to the top Div. I Mid-Major player in the nation.
McKinney was selected to the Mid-Major Player of the Year Watch List back in January, and is now one of 31 finalists for the award. In addition, each of the 31 finalists comprise this year's Lou Henson All-America Team.
The recipient of the Lou Henson Award will be announced at the CollegeInsider.com Awards Banquet on April 3, in Indianapolis, the site of this year's NCAA Div. I Men's Basketball Championship.
The award is named in honor of Henson, who retired after a coaching career that spanned 41 years. When he left the game in 2005, he ranked No. 6 all-time with 770 Div. I career wins, and is one of only 12 coaches in NCAA history to take two schools to the Final Four.
McKinney's announcement comes two days after Sacramento State head coach Brian Katz was selected as one of 16 finalists for the Hugh Durham Award, presented to the country's top mid-major coach. This year's selection for the Hugh Durham Award will also take place at the same banquet on April 3.
McKinney recently completed an incredible season in which he was named Big Sky Player of the Year, unanimous first team all-Big Sky, a four-time league player of the week honoree, and an all-Big Sky Tournament selection.
He helped lead the Hornets to 21-12 overall record, a 13-5 Big Sky Conference mark, and the program's first postseason berth during the Div. I era (1991-pres.) when the Hornets advanced to the second round of the CIT. In fact, that 21-12 record marked the first time in the Div. I era the Hornets finished with a record above .500, and the 21 victories tied for second most in program history (1948-pres.).
McKinney became Sacramento State's first conference MVP since 1977, and the first Hornet in school history to be named unanimous first team all-Big Sky in back-to-back years. The Union City, Calif., native finished the season averaging 19.2 points, 4.9 assists, 2.8 rebounds, 2.4 steals, a +2.3 assist-to-turnover ratio and 37.0 minutes per game while shooting .507 (219-432) from the field, .430 (65-151) from the 3-point line and .803 (110-137) from the free throw line.
That .507 field goal percentage ranks as the sixth best mark in the nation among guards. In fact, McKinney ranks among the nation's top 60 players in 10 different categories, including seventh in steals per game, eighth in total steals, 23rd in field goals made and minutes per game, 28th in points per game, 32nd in total points, 48th in assists per game, 54th in total assists, 58th in total minutes, and 60th in assist-to-turnover ratio.
A two-time team co-captain, McKinney scored at least 15 points during each of the final 16 games of the season, and had at least nine points in all 32 games he played. Amazingly, he shot at least 40 percent from the field in all but four games, and at least 50 percent on 18 occasions. In addition, he led the Hornets in scoring 21 times, and in assists on 22 occasions.
For his career, McKinney started all 91 games in which he played in a Sacramento State uniform, scoring in double figures 76 times, including 44 of his last 45 games dating back to last year.
He ranks fourth in Sacramento State history in career points (1,468), and is the program's all-time leader in points among players that were not in the program for four years. In fact, McKinney ranks among the top 20 players in program history in 19 different categories despite playing three years.
That includes second in games started (91), total minutes played (3,105) and minutes per game (34.1), third in free throws made (320), fourth in points (1,468), steals (149), free throws attempted (395) and field goals made (508), fifth in assists (369), sixth in field goals attempted (1,082), eighth in 3-point percentage (.389) and steals per game (1.6), and 10th in 3-pointers made (132) and assists per game (4.1).
