McKINNEY NAMED BIG SKY MEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State junior Mikh McKinney was named the Big Sky Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week today after leading the Hornets to home victories against Idaho State and Weber State.

A shooting guard from Union City, Calif., McKinney averaged 29.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 5.5 assists in the two games last week. He also shot .588 (20-34) from the field, .600 (3-5) from the 3-point line, .938 (15-16) from the free throw line, and had a 3.6-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio (11 assists, three turnovers).

The award is the first for a Hornet this season, and the first during McKinney's two-year career at Sacramento State. McKinney transferred to Sacramento State following his freshman year at Ohlone College.

He led the Hornets in scoring in both games, tallying a then season-high 28 points on Thursday against Idaho State, and trumping that effort on Saturday with a career-high tying 30 points vs. Weber State. He finished 10-of-17 from the field in both games.

In Saturday's win, McKinney scored seven of his 30 points in the overtime session, and also finished with five rebounds and a game-high six assists in 42 minutes. He buried all four of his free throw attempts during the game's final 10 seconds, and finished with 14 points in the first half, nine more in the second half, and seven in overtime. The win snapped the Hornets' 12-game losing streak against Weber State which dated back to the 2006-07 season.

In Thursday's victory against Idaho State, McKinney finished with 28 points, five assists and a steal in 28 minutes.

He now leads the Hornets in overall scoring (15.2 ppg) and scoring against conference competition (15.5 ppg). McKinney also leads the team with 15 double figure scoring efforts this season, and has paced the team in scoring a team-high 10 times. He has started 48 straight games dating back to the last year's season opener.

Sacramento State (8-11, 4-6) resumes its season-long four-game homestand over the next seven days with games against Northern Arizona on Thursday, and Southern Utah on Monday, Feb. 10. Both games tip at 7:05 p.m.
