PRESEASON FOOTBALL POLLS REVEALED AT BIG SKY KICKOFF

PRESEASON FOOTBALL POLLS REVEALED AT BIG SKY KICKOFF

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Big Sky conference preseason football coaches and media polls were released on Monday as part of the Big Sky Kickoff event. Sacramento State was picked to finish 11th out of 13 teams by the coaches and was selected 12th by the media.

The two polls were nearly identical this year with Eastern Washington claiming the top spot in both. The Eagles received 10 of 12 possible first-place votes (coaches cannot vote for their own team) and finished with 140 points. EWU received over half the first-place picks in the media poll and accumulated 536 points. UC Davis was second in each poll and was followed by Weber State. The Aggies garnered two first-place votes in the coaches poll to just edge WSU, 127-124. UC Davis totaled 510 points in the media poll compared to 472 from the Wildcats.

One of the few difference in the polls came at Nos. 4 and 5 where in-state rivals Montana and Montana State were flip-flopped. The Griz took home the last remaining first-place vote by the coaches and were selected fourth with 104 points while MSU had 100. In the media poll, Montana State amassed 417 points to finish ahead of UM (396).

The polls synced back up from the next five positions as Northern Arizona was picked sixth, Idaho State was seventh, Idaho eighth, Cal Poly ninth and Portland State 10th by both groups. Sacramento State was just two points behind PSU for 10th place in the coaches poll as the Hornets received 40 points. Southern Utah was two points behind Sacramento State for 11th and Northern Colorado was 12th. In the media poll. SUU was 11th with 160 points, the Hornets were picked 12th with 125 and Northern Colorado was 13th.

The Big Sky preseason polls have not proved to be terribly reliable when it comes to forecasting the upcoming season. Two years ago, North Dakota was the favorite but finished the season 2-6 and tied for ninth place. That same season. Weber State was picked fifth and Southern Utah seventh and the two shared the regular season title. This past year, three teams shared the title with EWU, Weber State and UC Davis. The Eagles and Wildcats were the top two preseason choices but UC Davis was picked ninth in both polls.

Based on the preseason rankings, Sacramento State has the toughest schedule in the Big Sky this season. The Hornets' eight conference games come against teams ranked among the top nine as only Idaho State does not appear. The top four teams in the coaches poll (EWU, UCD, WSU, UM) will also visit Hornet Stadium during conference play.
