FOOTBALL DROPS CAUSEWAY CLASSIC TO #9 AGGIES

RENO, Nev. — The Sacramento State football team closed its season with a 56-13 loss to #9 UC Davis in the 65th Causeway Classic on Saturday. The game was held at Mackay Stadium on the Nevada campus due to concerns of air quality in the Sacramento region.

The Hornets wrap up the year with a 2-8 overall record and finished 0-7 in Big Sky Conference games. The Aggies improved to 9-2 overall and 7-1 in league play.

UC Davis scored on its opening drive with a 77-yard pass and never slowed. The Aggies led 14-3 at the end of the first quarter and pushed its advantage to 35-10 at halftime. Sacramento State received a 34-yard field goal from Owen Hoolihan in the first quarter and scored its first touchdown on an 18-yard pass to Pierre Williams in the second quarter.

The Hornets began the second half with a 17-play drive which ate nearly half the time off the third quarter clock but had to settle for a 21-yard field goal from Hoolihan. However, UCD scored the next 21 points to close out the contest.

Kevin Thomson returned to the Hornet lineup for the first time since being injured at Southern Utah on Oct. 13. Thomson completed 10-of-25 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 33 yards.Williams had three catches for 65 yards to lead the team in both categories. Fellow freshmen Tao McClinton (20 yards) and Jarrell Anderson (10 yards) each had a pair of grabs.

Sophomore Elijah Dotson rushed for a team-high 61 yards on 14 attempts. The sophomore moved into seventh place in school single-season history with 1,154 yards and jumped to ninth on the career list with 1,629 yards in just two seasons.

Immanuel Anderson and Marcus Bruce each had double digit tackles to guide Sacramento State. Anderson was credited with 15 tackles to finish one off his career high. The senior's total included nine solos and two tackles-for-loss. Bruce recorded a career best 11 stops with six solos. He also had a TFL and forced a fumble.

UC Davis compiled 691 yards of total offense compared to 297 from the Hornets. Maier completed 37-of-46 passes for 478 yards and four scores and also rushed for 13 yards and two TDs. Doss had 16 receptions for 205 yards and two touchdowns and Ulonzo Gilliam rushed for 138 yards.

SCORING SUMMARY

First Quarter
13:35 - UC Davis wasted no time getting on the board as Maier found Jared Harrell for a 77-yard touchdown pass over the middle of the field. Harrell got free near the 20 yard line and outran the defender to the corner of the end zone.

10:19 - After forcing a Sacramento State punt, Maier called his own number on a 1-yard keeper to put the Aggies up 14-0. The run capped a 7-play, 80-yard series.

2:22 - Sacramento State scored its first points on a 34-yard field goal from Owen Hoolihan. Jaelin Ratliff hauled in a 21-yard pass and withstood a big hit to convert on 3rd-and-2 during the drive.

Second Quarter
14:28 - UC Davis extended its lead early in the second quarter on a 9-yard rush from Maier. The drive was nearly halted near midfield when Tehran Thomas was stripped on third down but was able to recover a fumble. One play later, Ethan Hicks rushed 25 yards up the middle on a fake punt to set up the touchdown.

9:59 - Ethan Hicks pushed the score to 28-3 with a 3-yard rush. Doss had a 23-yard catch on 3rd-and-10 to take the ball to the Hornet 10.

6:07 - The Hornets' first touchdown came from Pierre Williams on the next series. The freshman had a 34-yard catch down the right sideline early in the series. On 3rd-and-8 from the 18, Williams took a short pass from Thomson and eluded a couple of defenders for his fifth score of the year.

0:15 - Sacramento State looked like it was going to carry its momentum when UC Davis muffed a punt at their own 40. Instead, the ball squirted through five Hornets and was recovered by the Aggies. UCD needed just 1:46 to go 62 yards and ended the series with a 13-yard pass to Doss for a score.

Third Quarter
7:46 - The Hornets used nearly half the quarter on the opening drive of the second half but settled for a 21-yard field goal from Hoolihan. Sacramento State was run-heavy during the 17-play, 71-yard drive with carries from Bryant Perkinson, Elijah Dotson, Isaiah Gable and Thomson. The team was able to get to the Aggie 4-yard line but through an incomplete pass on third down.

1:22 - Maier and Doss worked their magic for UCD's first points of the second half. The pair connected three times for 43 yards and also drew a pass interference penalty on another attempt. Doss scored his second touchdown on a 5-yard crossing pattern.

Fourth Quarter
11:40 - Tight end Wesley Preece pushed the score to 49-13 with a 9-yard reception. Preece boxed out the Hornet defender similar to a basketball player going for a rebound for Maier's fourth passing touchdown of the game.

2:44 - UC Davis added its exclamation point with a 4-yard rush from Namane Modise to conclude a 12-play, 65-yard drive.
