OFFENSE SURGES LATE TO WIN THE GREEN & GOLD GAME

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The offense scored touchdowns on its final three drives and played turnover free to lead the Gold team to a 39-20 victory over the Green on Saturday in Sacramento State's annual spring football game.

The offense used three quarterbacks during the game as sophomore Daniel Kniffin and redshirt freshmen Nolan Merker and Alexis Robinson each took snaps. After being held scoreless through the first four series of the game, the Gold got on the board with 3-yard touchdown reception from Jaelin Ratliff from Kniffin. The points capped an 11-play drive which travelled 50 yards and saw the offense convert on two third downs and a fourth down. Redshirt freshman Jabarri Johnson hauled in a 15-yard pass on 3rd-and-10 before an acrobatic 12-yard grab on 4th-and-5 to take the ball to the 3-yard line to set up Ratliff's score.

On the ensuing series, Robinson showed his athleticism with a 12-yard scramble on 3rd-and-7 to take the ball to the 9-yard line. Following a 5-yard rush from Hunter Rockwell, redshirt freshman Jeremiah Reddick sprinted through the middle of the line for a 4-yard TD.

The offense kept its momentum rolling on the final drive of the game with a 55-yard touchdown drive. Johnson started the series with a 25-yard catch from Merker. Following a couple of small gains, Ratliff caught an 11-yard pass leading to a 7-yard touchdown run from Garrett Steele.

The game began with an electrifying 93-yard kickoff return from Isiah Hennie for a touchdown. The defense then showed its strength limiting the offense to just 24 yards on its first 13 plays. The defense scored points early on with tackles-for-loss from redshirt freshman Tamas Stewart and Dre Terrell. The unit added to its total after creating 3-and-outs on its next two drives.

Sophomore Lenny Cowans and senior Nick Mazza added sacks during the third and fourth series and Austin Clark was credited with a tackle-for-loss.

The Green & Gold game concluded spring practice for the Hornets. The team will open the 2015 regular season on Sept. 5 against Eastern Oregon at Hornet Stadium.
