SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State head football coach Jody Sears announced the signing of 29 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent today. The large group joins three midyear transfers that joined the team at the start of the semester and will compete in spring practice drills.

The 31 total signess are comprised of 18 defensive players and 13 on offense. Sacramento State brought in nine defensive linemen and six defensive backs for its largest totals in a position group. On offense, the team will have four new linemen as well as three quarterbacks.

“Our first initial need was to address our defensive line depth because we lost four seniors,” Sears said. “Along with the young players we already have, I feel like we’ve put ourselves in a good situation in that area.

“Obviously the QB situation needed some help and I’m happy with the two transfers with Kolney and Alexis and excited about Nate Ketteringham. He’s played against some good competition and is a good player. I don’t want to say he’s similar to Garrett Safron but he brings some of the same qualities to the table that Garrett had.”

Coming off a 7-5 season and a win in the Causeway Classic over UC Davis, Sears also stressed the importance of continuing to develop the locker room culture.

“We were looking for kids that were good locker room guys and be our type of player. They are going to be tough, selfless, loyal and play with great heart. When we do research on each kid we have to follow that order as well as watch film and see if they can run and be good football players. We were very diligent and addressed a lot of needs and continue to place character ant the top of the list in terms of recruiting."

Another high priority for this year's recruiting class was to mine the Sacramento area for talent. The class includes 10 players who prepped nearby and another seven who are within a three-hour drive of campus.

“It was extremely import to recruit in our backyard,” he said. “Some of the best football players that signed today are from this area. There is a lot of good players here and we offered probably close to 20. Coach (Fred) Kelley, our recruiting coordinator, who recruits the area did a nice job. It’s a high priority and a point of emphasis.”
