TODD DAVIS AND JUSTIN WELDON HONORED AS FCS ALL-AMERICANS

PHILADELPHIA — Sacramento State senior linebacker Todd Davis was named second team All-America by The Sports Network and senior punter Justin Weldon was a third team selection by the Associated Press, it was announced today.

Davis, who was also a first team all-Big Sky Conference selection, led the Big Sky and ranked fifth nationally in the FCS with 10.9 tackles per game. His total of 131 stops is the fifth most in school single season history and he concluded his career with 351 total tackles to rank second in the Hornet record book. Davis, who was honorable mention all-Big Sky in 2011 and a second team selection in 2012, also had five sacks, two interceptions, a pair of forced fumbles and four pass breakups during the season.

"I'm excited and greateful for this honor," Davis said. "My goal to was become an All-American and this is great. This a tribute to the defense as a whole. Without them I would not have been chosen for this award."

The Palmdale, Calif., native is just the fifth Sacramento State player to earn first or second team honors by The Sports Network — largely regarded as the top source of FCS football. The only other defensive players to earn the honor were defensive tackle Christian Clark (2009) and defensive end Zack Nash (2010) who were both second team. Linebackers Cyrus Mulitalo and Mike Brannon were honorable mention All-Americans in 2007. Mulitalo repeated the honor in 2008.

Weldon is the first punter to earn All-America in Sacramento State's Div. I era. The Madera, Calif., native  finished fourth in the FCS with an average of 44.9 yards per punt. That mark easily set the Sacramento State single-season record and his career average of 44.2 is also the best by a Hornet. Against UC Davis, Weldon boomed a 78-yard punt which broke the school mark of 75 which was set in 1973.

"This is an amazing honor," Weldon said. "I struggled through camp but was given a chance by the coaches heading into the first game. I was able to take that opportunity, regather myself and focus on the game at hand. I took advantage of each opportunity that I got and put me back on track."

Both Davis and Weldon will also participate in commencement ceremonies this weekend.
