OGDEN, Utah — Sacramento State quarterback Garrett Safron was named the ROOT SPORTS Offensive Player of the Week by the Big Sky Conference, it was announced today. The award is the second for Safron this season and the fourth of his career.
Against No. 12 Montana, Safron set several school records in an overtime loss. The junior amassed 505 of total offense and accounted for six touchdowns against the Grizzlies. Safron completed 41-of-58 passes for 412 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed for 93 yards on 20 attempts with a pair of scores. His 41 completions and 412 passing yards as well as his total offense mark all set Sacramento States single-game records.
The Santa Monica, Calif., native rushed for both of his touchdowns in the second half and had touchdown passes of 25, 5, 4 and 5 yards. He helped force overtime when he connected with Cole Hikutini for a 5-yard touchdown pass with 23 seconds left in regulation.
Safron's latest performance continued his ascent up the career records list at Sacramento State. He enters this week's game at Cal Poly ranked second in career completions (484) and touchdowns (47) and third in attempts (774) and yards (5,244). Safron is also now tied for second in touchdowns (22), tied for third in completions (214) and seventh in yards (2,310) in school single-season history.
