GREELEY, Colo. – Sacramento State (28-18, 14-6 WAC) came from behind on Saturday before fending off the Northern Colorado Bears (10-28, 6-14 WAC) in a high scoring, 15-10 win, in Colorado. The two teams combined for 25 runs on 28 hits, including 10 for extra bases.

With the win, Sacramento State improves to 28-18 overall and 14-6 in the WAC. The Hornets, who are currently third in the WAC, are just two wins shy of their eighth consecutive 30-win season. Northern Colorado, meanwhile, falls to 10-28 overall and 6-14 in league play.

Things escalated quickly on Saturday as Sacramento State pulled out to a 6-0 lead after two innings. Dawsen Bacho tripled to straight away center, driving in two, in the first inning for one of the innings biggest hits. Behind him, Dylan McPhillips also added an RBI-triple.

Northern Colorado rallied back immediately, tying things with a six-run second inning. The Bears hit four home runs in the bottom of the second, including a game-tying, two-out, three-run blast. They went ahead, 7-6, the very next inning.

Things remained the same for three innings before Sacramento State jumped back ahead in the top of the sixth. Steven Moretto knocked in two with a little help from the Northern Colorado defense to put the Hornets ahead, 8-7. McPhillips extended the lead to 9-7 with an RBI-single.  

Things really took off in the top of the eighth as the Hornets put up a five spot in in the inning, taking a 14-7 lead. Matt Smith had a two-run single while Moretto cleared the bases with a three-run double. The Hornets had the benefit of three Northern Colorado errors in the inning.

Bacho gave Sacramento State its final run of the afternoon with a solo home run, his second in as many games, in the top of the ninth.

The Bears got two runs back in the eighth and another in the ninth, but Tanner Dalton shut the door to secure the win for the Hornets.

Matt Smith led Sacramento State with four hits in the game, going 4-for-5 with a double, four runs scored, and two RBIs. Dawsen Bacho was 3-for-6 with a home run, a triple, two runs scored, and four driven in. Steven Moretto, although officially 1-for-5, reached base three times and collected a team-high five RBIs.

In total, the Hornets had 13 hits, including four for extra bases. Seven different Hornets had at least one hit and eight scored at least one run.

On the Northern Colorado side of the diamond, the Bears scored 10 runs on 15 hits, including six extra base hits. The Bears hit four home runs in the game.

Travis Adams picked up the win for Sacramento State, improving to 2-2 on the season, after throwing 1.1 innings. The Hornets used four different pitchers Saturday, none of which went more than 2.2 innings.  

The rubber match of this weekend's series at Northern Colorado is set for tomorrow, Sunday, May 5. First pitch from Greeley is scheduled for 12 p.m. MT/11 a.m. PT. The series finale will stream live online at HornetSports.com/Radio and on the WAC Digital Network.
