BASEBALL SWEEPS WEEKLY AWARDS; SMITH AND DALTON NAMED WAC HITTER AND PITCHER OF THE WEEK

WAC Baseball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week Announced

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State's outfielder Matt Smith and reliever Tanner Dalton were named the Western Athletic Conference's Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the league announced Monday morning.

Smith started hitting on Wednesday and never stopped, posting a .643 batting average to go along with a .737 on-base percentage and 1.286 slugging percentage in four games.

He was nearly perfect in a WAC-series sweep of CSU Bakersfield, going 8-for-10 against the 'Runners with seven runs scored, seven RBIs and four extra-base hits, including two two-run home runs.

His best game came on Saturday, when he went a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with a double, triple and home run. He also scored four runs in what was a 10-7 win over CSUB.

In conference play (nine games), Smith is hitting .457 and leads the WAC in runs scored with 13.

Dalton saw action in all four of Sacramento State's games last week and impacted three of them directly, picking up a pair of wins and recording a save - all out of the bullpen - in a series sweep of CSU Bakersfield.

Against the 'Runners, Dalton came out of the bullpen on Friday and threw two innings to earn the win in a 4-3 decision. Returning to the bump on Saturday, he earned a one-inning save and then again made an appearance on Sunday, earning the win in a 5-4 walk-off.

On the week, Dalton threw 5.0 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits with four strikeouts.

The Player of the Week awards are the first of the season for Sacramento State and the program's first conference weekly awards since former Hornet Ian Dawkins was named Hitter of the Week on May 14 of last season.
