RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Sacramento State (17-9, 3-2 WAC) and the Cal Baptist Lancers (18-9, 3-2 WAC) went back and forth Saturday evening at Totman Field in Riverside, but it was the Lancers who came out on top, defeating the Hornets, 6-5.
Unlike last night's 21-10 offensive display, the Hornets did not score first in Saturday night's game as Cal Baptist went ahead 1-0 in the first against Sacramento State and starter Travis Adams.
The score remained the same until Sacramento State jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the fifth. Trevor Doyle opened the inning with a double before scoring on a squeeze bunt by Bronson Grubbs to tie the game.
Cal Baptist countered with three of their own in the sixth to take back they lead. They added another in the seventh, making it a 5-3 ballgame.
With two outs in the top of the eighth, pinch-hitter Ryan Walstad reached on an error before Grubbs drew a walk to put two on. Dawsen Bacho, who drove in a career-high five in last night's game, delivered a game-tying, two-run double to right-center.
In five conference games this season, Bacho is hitting a team-best .435 with a team-leading 10 RBIs. Since moving into the leadoff spot in the lineup seven games ago, Bacho is hitting .484 (15-for-31) with eight runs scored and 11 runs driven in.
Despite tying the game late, Cal Baptist scored its sixth run of the night in the home half of the eighth. Although Moretto reached in the top of the ninth for the Hornets, the Lancers held on for the 6-5 win.
With the loss, Sacramento State is now 17-9 overall and 3-2 in WAC play. The Cal Baptist Lancers improve to 18-9 and are also 3-2 in league.
The two teams will play one more time as they take the field tomorrow, Sunday, March 31 for the series finale. First pitch is scheduled for 12 pm PT and the game will stream live online.
