MESA, Ariz. – In another must-win game for Sacramento State, the Hornets continued to hit as they defeated the Seattle U Redhawks, 12-7, to advance to the WAC Championship game Saturday night. Sacramento State will take on New Mexico State Saturday night at 7:10 pm PT.
For the first time in an elimination game, Sacramento State (34-24) fell behind as Seattle U (24-23) hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.
The Hornets offense wasted no time in countering, though, scoring four runs in the top of the second inning. Sacramento State added two runs in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to take a commanding 10-3 lead.
Seattle U made things interesting, scoring four times in the bottom of the eighth with two two-run home runs, but the Hornets scored two more in the ninth to make it a 12-7 game.
Vinny Esposito had two hits and three RBIs, including a two-run home run. Keith Torres also had two hits and three RBIs, including a two-run double. Steven Moretto led the team with three hits, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.
It was another complete effort offensively for Sacramento State, as they recorded double-digit runs for the second time in four games and had 10 or more hits for the third time this tournament. Every Hornets starter recorded at least one hit. Eight of nine scored a run while seven of the nine collected at least one RBI.
On the mound, the Hornets received another incredible outing from their starter, this time Austin Roberts. Roberts, who started 14 games for Sacramento State last season, did not make a start this year, working solely out of the bullpen.
In Saturday's win over Seattle U, Roberts tossed a career-high seven innings while throwing a career-high 109 pitches. After allowing three runs on five hits in the first two innings, Roberts cruised through his final five frames, scattering two hits.
With the win, Sacramento State advances to Saturday night's championship game against New Mexico State. Because the WAC tournament is double-elimination format, the Hornets will have to beat the Aggies in tonight's game and again in a final, winner-take-all title game on Sunday to take home the 2018 WAC tournament championship.
Tonight's game is set for a 7:05 pm first pitch. The game can be seen live online at WACSports.com/Watch. An audio only stream will also be available at HornetSports.com/Radio. For more information, visit the 2018 Hornets Baseball schedule online at HornetSports.com.
