BASEBALL EDGED AT UC DAVIS 7-6

DAVIS, Calif. – In a 6-6 game in the bottom of the ninth UC Davis scored the winning run when a two-out balk forced in a runner from third base to give the Aggies a 7-6 win in the first of two meetings between the Causeway rivals this season.

The Aggies got a man to third on a two-out stolen base and a Hornet throwing error. After an intentional walk reliever Alex Dentoni was set to face Ignacio Diaz but was called for a balk before he threw his first pitch, forcing in Jacob Thomas from third with the winning run.

UC Davis (9-13) picked up its third win in the last four games after a home series win over CSUN. The Aggies beat the Hornets in Davis for the second straight year after Sacramento State (14-13) had won five straight road games against their rival.

The Hornets battled back from down 6-3 with three runs in the seventh inning. In the top of the ninth Ian Dawkins had a leadoff single and got to third with none out on a sacrifice bunt and a throwing error by UC Davis pitcher Matt Stone. With runners on the corners Stone came back to get a strikeout, a pop out to shortstop, and a fly out to center field to get his team to the home half of the ninth inning in a tied game.

Stone earned the win in relief, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts over two innings. Dentoni pitched a scoreless eighth inning but took the loss despite not allowing a hit in the ninth, as Thomas was hit by a pitch to open the inning.

After the first 12 outs of the game were recorded in order the Hornets took the lead with a pair of runs in the third inning. Trent Goodrich led off the inning with a single and came in to score on a Dawsen Bacho infield single. Ricky Martinez doubled to right field and Bacho would score on a Dawkins RBI groundout.

The Hornets went ahead 3-0 in the third as Vinny Esposito walked and Kody Reynolds singled before Esposito scored from third on a Goodrich suicide squeeze bunt. UC Davis came back with four in the bottom of the third on three hits, two walks, and two hit batters but stranded the bases loaded.

The Aggies scored another run on a Hornet fielding error in the fifth but again left the bases loaded to lead just 5-3. UC Davis then made it 6-3 in the sixth inning on a solo home run from Caleb Van Blake.

Sacramento State rallied back with three runs in the seventh. Bacho, Martinez, and Dawkins opened the inning with three straight singles to load the bases with none out and Bacho scored on a sacrifice fly from Andrew McWilliam. A groundout put runners on second and third with two away before James Outman came through with a 2-run single to tie the game.

The Hornets outhit the Aggies 10-7 for the game but left eight runners on base. Freshman starter Austin Roberts was perfect through the first three innings before running into trouble in the fourth while UC Davis starter Matt Blais allowed three runs on five hits and two walks over six innings.

Dawkins was 3-for-5 in the game, recording his team-leading 13th multi-hit game of the season and his fourth game with three or more hits. He also extended his hitting streak to 13 games and has reached base in 26 of 27 games played this year.

Bacho and Martinez both finished 2-for-4, with Martinez upping his season batting average to .360. Esposito had a double to extend his hitting streak to eight games.

The Hornets will host UC Davis next Tuesday and are right back in action tomorrow night, hosting Fresno State at 6 p.m. at John Smith Field.
