SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State associate head baseball coach Steve Holm has joined the Purdue staff as the program's new pitching coach.

Holm completed his fourth season at Sacramento State in 2016, and third as the associate head coach. He was both the pitching and catching coach with the Hornets while also assisting with the infielders and hitters. Holm coached three Hornets selected in the 2016 MLB Draft, comprised of pitchers Tyler Beardsley and Sam Long, and catcher Gunner Pollman.

The Hornet pitching staff posted the second best ERA, opponent batting average and WHIP in the WAC during the 2016 season. In 2015, Sacramento State's pitching staff ranked third in all of NCAA Div. I with a 1.09 WHIP while recording single-season program records in ERA (2.97), opponent batting aveage (.235) and fewest walks allowed (124).

The Hornets have won at least 30 games all four years of Holm's tenure, combining for 137 wins over that span, including a 67-41 record in the Western Athletic Conference.

"On behalf of our entire program, we would like to thank Steve for his service to our program over the past four years," Sacramento State head coach Reggie Christiansen said. "Steve has been an integral part of our success, which includes four straight 30-win seasons. He transformed our pitching staff into one of the best in the country statistically every year along with developing several Major League draft picks. We wish Steve and his wife, Lindsey, the best."

Assistant coach Jake Angier, entering his fourth season with the Hornets, will make the transition from recruiting coordinator to pitching coach during the 2017 season.

"I brought Jake in three years ago knowing that it would be a matter of time before Steve would have an opportunity to advance his career," Christiansen said. "Jake has served as a pitching coach at both South Dakota State and North Dakota State. While at South Dakota State, he mentored three players that pitched in the big leagues (Caleb Thielbar, Blake Treinen and Layne Somsen). I am confident that Jake will step in and we won't skip a beat on the pitching side."

Former Hornet Andrew Ayers will rejoin the program and serve as the third countable coach on an interim basis. "I am excited about our staff for the 2017 season. I will take my time filling Steve's position with someone that has a proven track record as a recruiter," Christiansen said.
