DENVER - Sacramento State junior right-handed pitcher Brennan Leitao has been named the WAC Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced Monday. The award is the first of the year for the Hornets, who previously claimed two WAC Hitter of the Week awards.
Leitao, a junior from Irvine, was simply dominant against Chicago State on Friday, throwing eight shutout innings and limiting the Cougars to just four base runners (three singles, one walk) in a 6-0 win. He totaled six strikeouts, did not allow a runner past second base in the game, and did not allow a hit over his last four innings of work. Of his 103 pitches thrown, 74 were strikes, and he held the Cougars to 3-for-27 (.111) hitting.
In WAC play Leitao, who was an all-WAC first team selection last season, is now 6-0 with a 1.50 ERA in seven starts, allowing just eight earned runs over 48.0 innings with a 39/7 strikeout to walk ratio and a .227 opposing batting average. For the season he is 7-3 with a 2.33 ERA and a .242 opposing batting average with just 21 earned runs allowed in 81.0 innings.
Leitao will take the mound again on Friday night at Texas-Pan American in what figures to be a tremendous pitching matchup. The Hornet ace will likely face UTPA senior Sam Street, who is tied for the NCAA lead with an 11-0 record and has a 1.63 ERA this season.
