BASEBALL FALLS, 6-4, AS UTAH VALLEY EVENS SERIES

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Utah Valley scored five runs over a two-inning stretch and held on late as the Sacramento State baseball team lost, 6-4, on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game at John Smith Field.

The Hornets (5-5) snapped a three-game winning streak with the loss while the Wolverines (5-6) won for the first time since upsetting No. 10 Arizona on Tuesday. Sacramento State scored four runs on eight hits with no errors while Utah Valley posted six runs on 12 hits with one error.

Sacramento State starting pitcher Brennan Leitao breezed through the first three innings. The sophomore allowed just one hit in the first three frames while throwing 25 of his 30 pitches for strikes. But the Wolverines broke through against Leitao in the fourth and fifth.

Utah Valley scored five runs on seven hits combined in the two innings and led, 5-1, heading to the sixth inning.

The Hornets chipped away at the lead in the sixth. Sacramento State second baseman Andrew Ayers reached on a fielding error and advanced to second on a single by first baseman Rhys Hoskins. Third baseman Will Soto smacked a single to right to score Ayers and advance Hoskins to third, but Soto was thrown out at second while trying to take an extra base. Hoskins came home on a wild pitch in the next at-bat.

Sacramento State scored a single run in the seventh on outfielder Nathan Lukes' RBI single to left, which made it a one-run game. The Wolverines stymied the Hornets' momentum by scoring one run on three hits in the eighth. Sacramento State's bullpen allowed just one run on four hits over the final four innings but the offense couldn't score in the eighth and ninth to complete the rally.

Utah Valley starting pitcher Devin Nelson (1-0) earned the win after allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits in 6.1 innings with four strikeouts and no walks. In fact, not a single walk was issued by either side in the game. Reliever Jeff Barto earned his first save of the season after allowing just one hit over the final 2.2 innings. Leitao (1-1) took the loss for the Hornets after surrendering five runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.

The rubber match of the three-game series is scheduled for noon on Sunday. Sacramento State will throw RHP Zach Morgan while Utah Valley will counter with RHP Blake Krahenbuhl, who was set to pitch on Saturday but was bumped back and Nelson was pushed up.
