BIG SIXTH INNING LEADS BASEBALL TO SHUTOUT WIN, 10-0, AT SAINT MARY’S

MORAGA, Calif. – The Sacramento State baseball team posted eight runs in a big sixth inning while starting pitcher Ty Nichols was dominant on the mound and the Hornets shutout Saint Mary's, 10-0, in a non-conference game on Tuesday afternoon.

The Hornets (10-6) won for the eighth time in 10 games after posting 10 runs on 15 hits with no errors. The Gaels (5-12) lost after scoring no runs on four hits with four errors.

In three midweek games this season, Sacramento State has defeated Nevada, rival UC Davis and Saint Mary's by a combined score of 28-1.

Nichols (2-1) earned the win after tossing six scoreless innings of two-hit baseball with four strikeouts and no walks. Sacramento State pitching has three shutouts through 16 games season. The Hornets had four shutouts in 59 games last season.

Saint Mary's starting pitcher Gary Cornish (1-2) took the loss after allowing six runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings with one strikeout and two walks. The Gaels used three pitchers in the sixth inning, and each gave up at least one run.

The Hornets jumped out to an early lead when they scored two runs on back-to-back wild pitches in the second inning. Nichols kept it a 2-0 game until the Sacramento State bats took over.

Designated hitter Chris Lewis led off the sixth inning with a walk and left fielder Justin Higley drove him in with a two-run homer to right center. Higley has hit a home run in back-to-back games, as he also crushed a solo homer in Sunday's series-clinching win over Cal State Northridge.

After right fielder Nathan Lukes reached on a bunt single and moved to second on a wild pitch, catcher Dane Fujinaka singled up the middle to bring him home. Third baseman Will Soto followed with another single and center fielder David Del Grande loaded the bases with a walk. First baseman Rhys Hoskins drove in the fourth run of the inning with a sacrifice fly but second baseman Andrew Ayers did one better, bringing home a pair with a single up the middle.

Lewis, who started the sixth inning with a walk, came up to bat again in the frame and doubled down the left field line to drive in Ayers. Higley, who homered earlier in the sixth, drew a full count walk and then both he and Lewis came home on a single by Lukes.

Higley went 3-for-4 in the game with a homer, two doubles, two runs and two RBIs to lead the Hornets offensively. Ayers and Lukes also had two RBIs apiece. Each starter in the lineup had at least one hit against the Gaels.

Up next for Sacramento State is a three-game series this weekend at UC Santa Barbara. The Gauchos are 8-7 this season and 6-3 at home.
