PITCHING LEADS BASEBALL TO 4-1 WIN VS. NEVADA

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Sacramento State baseball team's four pitchers allowed just one unearned run on five hits in a 4-1 victory over Nevada on Tuesday afternoon at John Smith Field.

The Hornets (4-4) tallied four runs on seven hits with one error while the Wolf Pack (5-4) posted just one run on five hits hits with no errors.

Sacramento State senior LHP Tyler Hoelzen (1-0) earned his first win of the season in his first career start after going 3-2 in a school record 31 relief appearances last year. The Minden, Nev., native gave up just one hit in four innings with five strikeouts and two walks in a controlled start. RHP Mason Magleby, RHP Brandon Creel and RHP Brennan Leitao combined to toss five innings of one-run relief. Leitao earned his first career save as he recorded three straight outs after coming in with the bases loaded in the ninth.

The offense got rolling for the Hornets in the second inning. OF David Del Grande led off with a walk and moved to second when OF Justin Higley reached on a bunt single. Both moved up 90 feet on Scotty Burcham's sacrifice bunt. Redshirt freshman C Dane Fujinaka drove in Del Grande with an RBI ground out to second and junior 2B Scott Loper singled to bring home Higley.

The Hornets tacked on another run in the fourth on Fujinaka's RBI double down the left field line and scored again in the sixth on a wild pitch.

Justin Higley paced the offense with his 2-for-4 performance while five others had single hits. Fujinaka had two RBIs while Loper had another.

Nevada had five players record single hits while shortstop Shaun Mize recorded the RBI on the Wolf Pack's lone run.

The Hornets, winners in three of their last four games, defeated their former Western Athletic Conference rival, Nevada, on Tuesday and will host a future WAC foe, Utah Valley, this weekend. RHP Ty Nichols will start on at 2 p.m. Friday with Leitao at 1 p.m. on Saturday and RHP Zach Morgan at noon on Sunday.
