SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Sacramento State baseball team smacked six extra base hits and defeated Utah Valley, 10-3, on Sunday afternoon at John Smith Field to win the three-game series with the Wolverines.

The Hornets (6-5) won for the fourth time in five games after posting 10 runs on nine hits and seven walks with no errors. The Wolverines (5-7) scored three runs on nine hits and no walks with no errors.

Sacramento State starting pitcher RHP Zach Morgan (1-1) earned the win after allowing two runs on eight hits over six innings with four strikeouts. Utah Valley starter RHP Blake Krahenbuhl (0-2) did not record an out in a losing effort after allowing all four batters he faced in the first inning to reach and score.

The Hornets jumped out to an early lead with four runs on three hits in the first inning. Outfielder Justin Higley led off with a double and moved to third when outfielder David Del Grande's double to right barely escaped a diving outfielder. First baseman Rhys Hoskins was hit by a pitch to load the bases and third baseman Will Soto drew a walk to drive in the first run.

That was the end of Krahenbuhl's day but the Hornets weren't finished scoring. Second baseman Andrew Ayers hit a RBI groundout in the next at-bat to score Del Grande before designated hitter Chris Lewis cleared bases with a two-RBI single to left, which drove in Hoskins and Soto.

The Wolverines got two runs back in the second but Morgan cruised after that while the Hornets' offense kept clicking.

Hoskins put Sacramento State's fifth run on the scoreboard with a massive home run to left field that landed on the top of the parking structure. It was the sophomore's first home run of the year after he hit 10 last year in a freshman All-American season.

The Hornets scored two more in the sixth after Soto drew another bases loaded walk and Del Grande was hit by a pitch in the very next at-bat.

Sacramento State's bats put the game away in the eighth after Del Grande, Hoskins and Soto hit back-to-back-to-back doubles. All in all the Hornets scored three runs on three hits in the inning before freshman RHP Sutter McLoughlin pitched a scoreless ninth to end the game.

Soto had a game-high three RBIs despite just one hit due to a pair of bases loaded walks. Hoskins, Del Grande and Lewis each had two hits on Sunday while Hoskins posted a team-high three runs scored. The top four hitters in Sacramento State's lineup went a combined 6-for-14 (all extra base hits) with eight runs, seven RBIs and four walks.

Hoskins, Lewis and Del Grande each went 4-for-11 in the series.

The Hornets will be back in action at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday at rival UC Davis before hosting Cal State Northridge this weekend at John Smith Field for a three-game series.
