HORNETS FINISH THIRD IN BIG SKY ALL-SPORTS POINTS CHAMPIONSHIP

Complete standings (pdf)

OGDEN, Utah - Sacramento State finished third among 11 programs in the Big Sky Conference’s all-sports overall athletic points championship, it was announced by the league today.

The Hornets have now finished among the top three Big Sky schools in the all-sports competition five consecutive years. That includes a first-place finish in 2011, second place in 2013, and third-place finishes in 2010 and 2012.

In this year’s competition, Northern Arizona, which won both the men’s and women’s all sports trophies, finished with an overall score of 143.8, ranking ahead of Montana (114.3), Sacramento State (94.5), Weber State (91.5) and Montana State (90) to round out the top five.

The competition is designed to award schools for overall athletic excellence. Schools are awarded points based on team finish in regular season Big Sky standings for women’s soccer, volleyball, football, men’s and women’s basketball, softball, and men’s and women’s tennis. Points are also awarded in men’s and women’s cross country, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field and women’s golf by virtue of finish at the Big Sky Championship. Teams are ranked according to total points scored.

Sacramento State’s women finished fourth in the race for the women’s all-sports championship, marking just the third time in seven years the Hornet women did not take home the title. The Hornets received top four finishes from the softball, golf, tennis, cross country and the indoor track and field squads.

On the men’s side, the Hornets finished sixth, but were less than six points out of third place.

Overall, Sacramento State has won three conference titles so far in the current academic year, including this past weekend when the baseball team won the Western Athletic Conference regular season title. During Athletics Director Dr. Terry Wanless’ 12-year tenure, the Hornets have combined to win 57 conference championships.
